In creating
"Marcy's Gift"
I wanted it to represent art on multiple levels; incorporated into one concept.
To help tell the story I composed a scene by assembling the characters within
"Beloved Belindy's" book as they existed in Marcella's nursery; including
Raggedy Ann and Andy. The Coo Coo Clock
and Dickey Bird appear on pages of the book; as well as the chair Marcella
is sitting on. I asked my good friend (and noted Artist)
Roberta Griffin to create an oil painting of that composition that would bring
an element of real life to the subjects while maintaining the integrity of
the fictional characters. I knew she would capture the relationship
that Marcy would have to the painting.

"Marcy" & Belindy"
"Beloved Belindy, cloth, 13" - by Caroli"
Belindy is made to replicate the original
storybook character. The fabric is hand dyed and painted to match the
detail and has been antiqued to simulate it's age in real time. The
features are all hand stitched and she has antique, pearl button eyes.

Inspiration
for "Marcy's Gift"
"Beloved Belindy book cover"
Johnny Gruelle wrote many wonderful books
and is probably best known for his Raggedy Ann & Andy stories. His own
daughter Marcella found an old rag doll in the attic and he named it Raggedy
Ann. Sadly, Marcella died at an early age and subsequently, Johnny Gruelle
wrote many books about a little girl named Marcella. My favorite is
Beloved Belindy. In this book, all the dolls come to life when
"real for sure people" aren't around and Belindy is the much loved
caretaker of them all. As a tribute to Johnny Gruelle, I created
an elaboration of Marcella and Beloved Belindy and designed
"Marcy's Gift".

"Marcy's
Gift"
I imagined
that a painting had been made of Marcella when she was a little girl.
In Marcy's story, many generations have passed and the portrait of her distant
relative has hung in her home for as long as she can remember. Knowing
she was named for the little girl in the painting, she always wondered what
happened to the doll she was holding. On her tenth birthday Marcy
received the greatest gift imaginable. Belindy was discovered in the
family's attic and now Marcy holds the doll she has always dreamed of.
